Sherritt International Corporation, A Canadian Story: Celebrating 90 Years of “Doing the Right Thing”
2017 marks Canada’s 150th birthday and also Sherritt’s 90th year as a responsible Canadian mining and energy company with a storied history of “doing the right thing”. We are proud of the successful track record of Sherritt and its predecessor companies - from humble beginnings as a small outfit with exploration properties in Manitoba 90 years ago to building and operating one of the world’s largest integrated hydrometallurgical nickel/cobalt mining and refining facilities in Madagascar and is internationally recognized for sustainability. Sherritt also has a proud 65 year history in Alberta. In 1952, Sherritt selected Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, to develop its new nickel and cobalt refinery and was the first major investment in what is now one of the largest industrial areas in Canada. The refinery produced fertilizer as a by-product, and became a major producer in western Canada. The site's research and development hub attracts global specialists in hydrometallurgy to Alberta.
