Today's Innovation; Tomorrow's Reality
EcoCar is student vehicle team at the University of Alberta that builds hydrogen powered cars. We compete annually at the Shell Eco-marathon Americas, which is a vehicle fuel-efficiency competition that brings over 120 teams from all over the world. EcoCar aims to provide experiential learning opportunities for 80+ members from the UofA and NAIT and to raise awareness about sustainability in Alberta. We chose the hydrogen fuel category at the competition because its only exhaust is water! Though most hydrogen is currently made from methane, any form of renewable energy can make it. However, it is also a difficult category to compete in; lack of knowledge and safety concerns deter many teams from entering and our competitors often fail the competition’s technical safety inspection and are not allowed to race. In 2016, EcoCar placed first at the Shell Eco-marathon Americas and won a spot to compete at the Shell Drivers’ World Championship in London, UK as the only Canadian team there.
