PrideBench: Inspiring Love & Acceptance
For many LGBTQ people, simple gestures like holding hands on a park bench can be a nerve-racking experience. Many are discouraged due to fears of public judgement or backlash. PrideBench is a design concept I came up with to celebrate Canadian diversity and inclusivity in the summer of 2016. The bench, painted in the colours of the LGBTQ flag, serves as a visual symbol for safe places, to advocate community acceptance, and to encourage people to be their true selves. For me this project is personal, as I myself only recently discovered a part of my own self-identity. PrideBench was featured at the 100in1DayFestival in Edmonton, at the Edmonton Pride Festival Grounds, in Edmonton’s City Hall, at the IGLA Championships host venue, and a segment on Global News TV Edmonton. The public used the hashtag #PrideBench to share photos on social media. The bench has been donated to the Edmonton Pride Festival Society and I hope continues to serve as a source for inspiration and change.
