Helping children get ready for learning and life.
Classrooms are increasingly diverse with more students arriving in Kindergarten with critical gaps in their social, emotional, language, and academic readiness. Factors such as poverty, family mental health and english as a second language, can potentially affect how a child performs in school. At least 20 per cent of Edmonton’s youth are struggling to overcome these vulnerabilities, which can interfere with their ability to learn. How do we level the playing field for ALL children and get them prepared for the rigors of Grade 1? Research informs us that early learning and full-day Kindergarten are the first steps toward bridging these inequities. Therefore the fundraising focus for the Edmonton Public Schools Foundation is to raise enough money to fund full-day Kindergartens in areas where the need is greatest. We are so appreciative of the generous donors in our community who have made it possible to fund and sustain six full-day Kindergarten programs.
